A fundamental accessory to determine the correct distance between the tip of the reading needle and therefore to minimize reading errors and maximize sound quality. When aligning a pickup cartridge with the help of this template, what you are looking for is to align the cantilever (and, therefore, the tip of the stylus), not the body of the cartridge. In fact, there is no guarantee that the cantilever is perfectly aligned within the capsule body, so simply aligning the latter will not necessarily produce the desired results.
Furthermore, the bodies of many pickup cartridges have non-parallel walls, which makes tangential alignment of the bodies with the lines of tangency of the template virtually impossible. With this Ortofon template on which the neutral points (null points) and the lines of tangency against which the capsule should be aligned are printed, it is ensured that the cantilever is parallel with respect to the relevant set of parallel lines. Thus, when the longitudinal axis of the capsule is parallel to the horizontal lines, the reading error will be the minimum possible.
