By definition, when tracking a log with a rotating arm, the overhang aligns perfectly perpendicular to the groove in only two instances. The longer the arm, the smaller the offset error between these two instances, resulting in less distortion. This explains why LPs tracked with the 12.1-inch long arm have more balanced and natural sounds (no rose is thorn-free, however: there aren't many turntables that can accommodate the 12.1-inch, among them the Brinkmann Balance - By the way, the 12.1-inch is not just a 10.5-inch with a longer binding tube.
