The Mission 700 takes what was called the "industry benchmark" in the original 700 model, but utilizes Mission 's 45 years of evolution and development in speaker design. Led by Mission Acoustic Design Director Peter Comeau, the new Mission 700 bears a striking aesthetic resemblance to the original. However, it incorporates numerous complex innovations and improvements that bring this revered model up to date.
Mission has developed a new polypropylene bass/midrange driver and model-specific motor system. This transducer not only updates the speaker's integral design to take into account modern dynamic and power handling requirements, but also maintains the extended response and low coloration of the original model with all the hallmarks and distinction of a leading speaker. in his class. From the rigid cast chassis to the low-density surround, every aspect has been revised to deliver a driver with improved rigidity and precisely controlled cone termination for dynamic performance and tight, fast and energetic output.
The distinctive reflex port has been carefully profiled both internally and externally to achieve very low distortion and extension below 38Hz in the room - quite an achievement for a box of this size!
It employs a new lightweight, coated microfiber dome for the high-frequency driver with a specially damped rear chamber that delivers super-smooth treble performance, largely thanks to the resonance control such a design offers.
The Mission 700s were a precursor to what would become a Mission standard in an unconventional driver array, something Mission calls "Inverted Driver Geometry." Not just a design statement, IDG is a staple of Misson speaker design from the 700 onwards. By placing the treble unit below the bass/mid driver, the path length is equalized so that the sound waves coincide at the height of the listener's head. This principle improves "time alignment." This design requires more than just reversing the speaker. Every aspect of industrial and mechanical design requires precision calculation to ensure placement, spacing and alignment contribute to the goal of optimal “time alignment.” This is perfected with a craftsman-level crossover design.
Part of the Mission design process includes simulation and crossover mapping using advanced software to precisely equalize the balance of the drivers and seamlessly integrate them into the overall performance of the speaker. Without breaking tradition or protocol, the effectiveness of software-based development is equal in part to thousands of hours of listening tests. The resulting crossover design delivers a musical character with exciting detail and musicality that not only matches but exceeds the acclaimed level of performance set by the original Mission 700.
As with the original, the new Mission 700 brings together technology and know-how in a reference loudspeaker design that never falls short in bass definition, frequency response, freedom from coloration, imaging, transient attack, depth and perspective, precision and linearity, speed and dynamic range. And as expected from a model with so much nostalgia and history, emotion in musical performance is never lacking!
The form factor stays true to the original wherever possible. This includes hand-applied rose or black stained real walnut veneers and a luxurious white laminated front baffle. However, as discussed in the original design, the Mission 700 makes use of less visible innovations incorporated into the design. The new 700 enclosure uses a sandwich construction of different woods held together by a layer of shock-absorbing adhesive. Internal reinforcements add more strength and support, while a foam and long-pile fiber blend provides internal resonance and reflection absorption...
