Marantz 's current digital reference source, the SA-10 is not only a superb player for CD and SACD discs and even high-resolution digital audio recorded on physical media. We are also looking at a reference digital audio processor that uses unique technology to extract all kinds of microinformation from music files. And it does so the Marantz way, that is, combining widely tested and proven audiophile elements with revolutionary technical solutions that have been developed specifically for this reference product. The digital technology available today has made it possible to replace conventional digital-to-analogue (D/A) conversion with something much more advanced, allowing the SA-10 to become the first USB-DAC record player that actually contains no a DAC. The secret is Marantz Musical Mastering, a new approach from Marantz to a nearly 35-year-old problem: getting the most out of music stored digitally without introducing artifacts (parasites) that require extra processing after conversion. A process consisting of two stages named MMM-Conversion and MMM-Stream is based on the experience accumulated by Marantz since the first days of the CD and puts it at the service of both the SACD and the format behind it, the DSD. So instead of downsampling and quantizing ultra-high-resolution files to fit the capabilities of a conventional D/A converter, the SA-10 converts everything to DSD256 using a process known as Marantz Musical Mastering-Conversion. Two dedicated master clocks are used to ensure that all digital signals are converted directly to DSD256 – whose resolution is 4 times that of the SACD standard – without any need to convert the sample rate, while two settings are available. To play SACD, CD, DVD-R/RW and CD-R/RW discs, the new Marantz equips a dedicated transport mechanism, the new SACD-M3, the latest model in a renowned family of reading mechanisms for optical discs Built for Marantz players. The latter is exclusive to the SA-10 and can read not only CDs and SACDs, but also high-resolution audio files stored on recordable CDs and DVDs.
