A "scaled-down" version of the absolutely "out-of-parameter" PS2K, the PS1K is an active subwoofer also belonging to the elite of McIntosh that keeps the external appearance, technology and functionalities of its big brother intact, but with a more compact form factor that makes it easier to position while remaining an absolute reference model.
As a result, it is a powerful loudspeaker system with integrated amplification and control electronics in the lower area of the cabinet, with the aim of bringing unparalleled precision and viscerality to film and music playback.
As far as the acoustic configuration is concerned, a total of two imposing 330 mm diameter woofers equipped with multi-layer carbon fibre cones and massive magnetic motors (very high power magnets, extra-long voice coils, ultra-robust suspensions), developed with the help of Finite Element Analysis (FEA), are used. They benefit from the "Low Distortion/High Performance" (LD/HP) concept of McIntosh to minimise distortion while increasing power delivery capability and sensitivity.
The "muscle" needed to drive this superb pair of loudspeakers without limitations is provided by two 500 watt continuous Class D amplifiers, which means a total power output of 1,000 watts that are delivered with absolute reliability even in particularly demanding operating conditions, thanks to the support of the legendary New York firm's tried and tested "Power Guard" and "Sentry Monitor" electronic protection schemes.
The PS1K is completed by a distinguished gloss black finish topped by carbon fibre trims and an aluminium base, as well as specific management elements aimed at ensuring a perfect match with electronics from the same brand, and, of course, the iconic bluish backlit analogue vumeter that is one of its now iconic hallmarks.
